Our Programs

The fundamental purpose of all Montessori education efforts is to create a more peaceful world through nurturing the spirit of the developing young child. This objective differs from traditional teaching for it requires children be made aware of their higher purpose over self-service or self-indulgence. This philosophy cultivates a respect and curiosity for the natural world and an understanding and acceptance of others through the virtues of love, humility, perseverance, adaptability, kindness and compassion.

With this philosophy as our foundation, Parkside Community School serves children ages 3-12.

All Montessori classrooms encompass an age span of three years, allowing younger students to learn from older role models and older students to test and reinforce their knowledge by helping younger classmates. Working in one class for three years, children are able to develop a strong sense of community with classmates and teachers. This gives them a solid foundation on which to build their future interactions with others and the world.

Curriculum overview

Montessori curriculum is organized into a mosaic of integrated studies, in contrast with the traditional education methods in which the curriculum is compartmentalized into subjects that are treated separately.

Each of our programs implements a thematic approach that ties the various disciplines of the curriculum together into studies of the physical universe, the natural world, and the human experience.

Our curriculum includes language arts (elements of reading, spelling, handwriting and Spanish language), mathematics and geometry, history, science, art, music and physical education. Additionally, all 3rd through 6th grade students learn to read music and play classical guitar. Each classroom has access to our campus library. We also have frequent assemblies featuring visiting artists, musicians, spiritual and cultural speakers, and career professionals. Parents are welcome to attend.

Parkside students consistently perform well academically, as evidenced by our Iowa Basic Skills Test Results 2006-2014.

“Parkside has a wonderful reputation in the Montessori community of Austin, and thus intrigued us. But what kept us at Parkside is the love and support we feel from the teachers, admin, directors, and community. Our primary teachers were more than just "guides" -- they obviously cared for my children in my absence. And Joe and Claire are the loving shepherds of a small flock of eager sheep.”
