Art Classes at Parkside

Parkside Community School - Austin Texas Montessori School

ART CLASSES – January 22 – March 7, 2013

THE GREAT PAINTERS
Human beings have been making paintings for more than 40,000 years. Through paintings we share stories, explore imagination, share insight, and celebrate the beauty of life. In these art classes, we will choose a series of artists to study and then create reproductions of masterworks. These paintings will not simply be copies, but a means through which to seek the spark of inspiration these masters drew from so that we might infuse it into our own creations.

We will work our way through the history of painting, touching on select moments – ancient cave paintings, the Renaissance, Japanese ink work, Impressionism, Modernism, and the contemporary practice of Street Art.

CLASS DETAILS
Classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3-5pm, from January 22nd through March 7th
We will meet on the Parkside campus in the Serena Room, which is next to the office in the courtyard.
Classes are for children ages 6 – 11 years old.
The class size will be limited to 10 students. If the class does not have a minimum of 6 participants, it will be cancelled.

COST
The cost for the session is $420 per child. This includes 7 weeks of classes (28 hours) and a final closing exhibition. All materials will be provided and each student will leave the class with one framed artwork and a series of works on paper.

Greetings,

My name is Johnny Walker and I am the proud father of Willa Walker, who is in Colleen and Deven’s Lower Elementary II class here, at Parkside. I’ve been an artist and art teacher for the past twenty years and am excited to offer afterschool Art classes at Parkside beginning November 6th.

As a teacher, I work to foster curiosity and wonder. I use art to teach children how to learn – how to develop questions, explore answers, and effectively share what they have discovered and created with others. My classroom is a place where individuals can take risks and explore ideas together, learn from mistakes, challenge assumptions, and broaden the boundaries of possibility. It is a place of focused effort where the dynamics of collaboration, innovation, support, and conversation are nurtured.

It is my goal that students leave my class with a solid foundation of art skills and a vocabulary with which to describe their work, an intrinsic love of learning and a passion to creatively explore their interests, finding and creating art in whatever endeavor they choose to undertake.

SESSION ONE – PAINTING – COLOR AND COMPOSITION

This first session will begin with painting and a basic study of color. We will learn the colors of the spectrum and how careful mixing of the primary colors can make all the colors of the rainbow.

We will experiment with how colors interact by making paintings of geometric patterns, stripes and grids. Discussions will include how color and our perception come together to create visual illusions and how tone and emotion can be conveyed in the colors we paint.

Next, we will study composition, using fables as a starting point. We will transform select stories into images, making paintings that illuminate the narrative and emotional content as well as each artist’s own personal interpretation of the story. We will share and discuss our work in class, comparing the different styles, and building our art vocabulary in these informal critiques.

The lessons and practices we cover will be adapted to suit the ages and skill level of each student.

At the end of the session we will curate our paintings, selecting pieces to frame, and have an exhibition to share our work.
