Book Study with Joe

Between Parent and Child
by Hiam Ginott.

Get it if you don’t already have it and start reading! It’s been a few years, but we are happy to be bringing back a book study with Joe Bruno. We encourage all parents to participate, it’s a great way to start the school year. Joe believes strongly that Between Parent and Child by Haim Ginott is the best he’s read yet because it covers many of the basic parenting techniques in a way that is easily understood and implemented while helping you cultivate a well balanced approach. Haim Ginott helps parents understand that they are in charge while still giving their children the reasonable level of autonomy they need to develop good social and learning skills.

There will be 2 sessions/meetings held in the Upper Elementary classroom.
Thursday, September 29th, 6-8pm
Thursday, November 17th, 6:30-8:30pm

The idea is to read at least half of the book before the 1st meeting the rest before the 2nd. Parents will be asked to take notes while reading the book and bring examples of scenarios to discuss. Meetings will be held on Thursday nights with plenty of time for discussion and questions.

Please feel free to park across the street to walk your child to their classroom.  Kindly say your goodbyes outside the classroom, only the children walk inside.

LUNCHES

Please send a healthy lunch for your child; fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain breads, good sources of protein, wholesome foods to help young minds grow strong.

BOX TOPS!!

Box Tops for Education

New for 2011/12 School Year:  BoxTops for Education

Elizabeth Kalbacher (Mom of Colby in UPE and Caye in LE1) here to tell you about Parkside’s newest (and maybe easiest) fundraiser – BoxTops for Education (BTFE).

BTFE is all about the difference 1 can make. This year, our goal is to raise $1000 through BTFE toward our total fundraising efforts to support scholarships, our growing art program and our classical guitar program. Here are three easy, everyday ways you can help:

Clip — Clip the Box Top from hundreds of participating products and send them to school. Each one is worth 10¢! In years past we had avoided BTFE because the majority of the products were not in line with what Parkside promotes with regard to healthy and environmentally friendly products for our homes and families. However, BTFE coupons are now on Cascadian Farms products, the new Betty Crocker Gluten Free line, Green Giant fresh produce, Nature Valley products, Land o Lakes Butter & Eggs, Zip-Loc re-usable containers and Brita filtration products to name a few.

Shop online — Shop at your favorite online stores (like Target, GAP, Dell, iTunes, Lands’ End, Old Navy, PetsMart, Southwest Vacations, Shutterfly to name a few) through the Box Tops Marketplace®. Up to 15 eBoxTops™ per $10 spent on qualifying purchases is automatically donated to our school, at no additional cost to you. Plus, you’ll get exclusive Box Tops deals and discounts! Be sure to enter your favorite online stores through the
Box Tops Marketplace®.

Read — Buy books online through the Reading Room, a partnership between Box Tops and Barnes and Noble. Our school receives up to 6 eBoxTops per $10 spent on qualifying purchases.

Sign up — It’s easy and free. Sign up to support Parkside at boxtops4education.com. Share this information with family and friends (near and far) so they can support Parkside as well.

Take a look at the complete list of BTFE products.

New Family Orientation: Aug 25

New Family Orientation

August 25 – 6:30 – 8:30pm

All new families are encouraged to join us for our New Family Orientation. We want to make sure to answer as many of your questions before the first day of school. Claire and Linda will be going over the Parent Handbook as well as discuss all logistics (drop-off, pick-up, lunches, birthdays, etc.) in hopes of getting you acclimated to Parkside’s unique school guidelines.
*Please make childcare arrangements as this will be a parent’s only information meeting.

Ready, Set, GO! Aug 20

Ready, Set, GO!

Saturday, August 20

Plan to come and participate in any way your family can manage. Spend one or two nights, come for the day on Saturday, come for the pot luck and singing around the campfire Saturday night. You will be so glad you made the effort as soon as you step out of your car – it is an enchanting place!

*We do such a great job reducing our footprint on the planet while at school, now it is time for us to try to reduce our footprint while we are camping. There is a program called “Leave No Trace” which teaches people how to camp and enjoy the outdoors while making as little impact as possible. In general, the rule is that if you bring it, you leave with it. There are a few simple steps we can all do to help “Leave No Trace” this camp out. First, after we finish our potluck dinner, everyone could pick up all of their dishes, food, plates and trash and put it away before the singing begins. The second part of the plan is that everyone make a sweep of their camping area in addition to the table area and the river area before they leave Pedernales Falls to go home. In an effort to protect our environment and still keep our kids safe, we are suggesting you bring some sort of reusable lighting device – flashlight, headlamp – instead of plastic glow sticks & necklaces. Come on out and join us for this wonderful Parkside tradition!
